Medieval Easter

It's going to be an action-packed Easter at the museum, with combat demonstrations and themed activities, plus you can explore the amazing national collection of arms and armour.

Daily programme

This is a sample daily programme for Medieval Easter.

11am – Talk and handling session

  • The Knightly Sword
    Learn about the medieval ‘arms race’ between swords and body protection.

12pm – Combat demonstration (one of the following)

  • Medieval sword master
    Authentic combat techniques from the 15th-century manual ‘Flower of Battle’ brought to life.
  • Two-handed sword fighting demonstration
    Watch our sword fighters as they demonstrate the challenges of battling with these fearsome medieval weapons.

1pm – Battle Stories (one of the following)

  • Battle of Towton
    Hear about the biggest and bloodiest battle ever fought on English soil.
  • Battle of Bosworth Field
    Learn about the last major battle fought between Yorkists and Lancastrians during the Wars of the Roses.
  • Agincourt archer
    Listen to the tale of an English archer as he recounts his role in the hard-fought battle of Agincourt.

2pm – Combat

  • Armoured pollaxe fight demonstration
    Watch our knights battle with pollaxes, as they demonstrate the challenges of fighting with these formidable medieval staff weapons.

3pm – Live presentation 
There will be a combat, a demonstration of arming a knight, a talk, or battle story.

  • Arming the knight
    Discover how medieval plate armour was worn, as our knight is armed from head to foot in an authentically re-created harness.

    We reserve the right to alter the programme without prior notification.

Craft activities

An assortment of make-and-take craft activities.

Daily 11am to 2pm.

Suitable for ages 5+

  • Heraldry
    Create your own medieval-style heraldry.
  • Medieval swords and shields
    Decorate a shield and sword with your own design.
  • Flags
    Design your own flag.

All materials will be provided. Children must be supervised at all times.
