First World War

Our onsite First World War study day is a living history day at Fort Nelson, near Portsmouth, where students can step back in time and develop their understanding about the First World War.

Fort Nelson was a depot for soldiers training and transiting to deployment on the Western Front - walk in their footsteps during this immersive day.

Study Day Information

During the study day your students will:

  • Take part in an immersive recruitment session, led by recruitment Sergeant, where students will discover how men were convinced to the war effort.
  • Examine and explore British and German troops equipment from training to the trenches including shells, machine guns and grenades.
  • Find out about the horrors of the trenches through the injuries and illnesses that soldiers would have faced, they will then discover the medical advancements being made during the First World War and how these were used in the chain of evacuation.

Duration

The day consists of three 45-minute workshops and a 1-hour break for lunch. The day starts at 10am and finishes at 2pm.
