The Lucky Ones Grow Old is an exhibition of thought-provoking portraits featuring Normandy veterans.

Life Stories

This photographic exhibition features striking portraits of nine veterans along with their stories of war-time service and their lives afterwards.

The photographs were taken by Portsmouth-based photographer Matt Sills, at a special Veterans event held at The D-Day Story museum on Monday 3 June 2024, during commemorations for the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

The Royal Armouries is proud to be hosting The Lucky Ones Grow Old at Fort Nelson this summer, as part of our commemorations to mark the 80th anniversaries of Victory in Europe and Victory in Japan.

This is a free exhibition and is included in your general admission ticket to the Fort.

Please pre-book your visit to guarantee entry, especially during the busy October half-term holiday period.
