Florence Nightingale KS1
Bring history to life and step into the Victorian world of Florence Nightingale.
In this immersive workshop day, pupils meet Florence Nightingale, explore the challenges of caring for soldiers during the Crimean war and take on the role of hospital inspectors. Through storytelling, roleplay and object handling, pupils discover why Florence Nightingale became such a significant figure.
Set in our Victorian fort, this workshop gives pupils a powerful sense of stepping into the past.

Curriculum Focus
- History: supports the study of ‘the lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements.
- History: Helps pupils develop an awareness of the past and identify ‘similarities and differences between ways of life in different periods’.
- English: (Speaking): The day also supports English through opportunities for pupils to listen and respond, ask and answer questions, explain their ideas, and participate in drama and discussion.
- English (Writing): use the workshop’s recruitment storyline to explore persuasive language.
What to expect
Your visit will include three 45-minute workshops delivered by in-character facilitators. The day will run 10am to 2pm, with lunchtime included.
Battle Encampment
Pupils will investigate life in a Crimean War army camp by getting hands-on with replica objects. They will uncover the problems of harsh living conditions, illnesses and injuries of soldiers’ daily lives that Nightingale tried to solve.
Scutari Hospital
Pupils explore the terrible conditions at the Scutari hospital, taking on roles as soldiers and nurses. Through roleplay, they will discover how Florence Nightingale improved care, comfort and recovery.
Fort Inspection
Pupils will consolidate their learning of Nightingale’s reforms through a hands-on inspection of a real Victorian fort, judging whether conditions are hygienic or not. Will it meet Florence’s standards for care and cleanliness?
