Friday 8th January - Saxons and Vikings

Set sail for the age of the Vikings and prove you have what it takes to join a longship crew. Train with a Viking warrior and gather around the campfire to help bring an epic story to life, with monsters, heroes and legendary adventures.

Friday 14th May - First World War

Follow in the footsteps of local soldiers in 1914. Complete your basic training, handle the equipment carried by British soldiers, and discover the harsh conditions of life in the trenches.

What to expect

Throughout the day, families will rotate through a range of immersive activities that encourage participation, creativity and discussion. Our galleries can be accessed throughout the day and help discover how weapons and armour shaped history, society, art and culture across centuries. With more than 6,000 fascinating objects on display, our galleries offer an inspiring way to bring your history learning to life.

Military Drill

Answer the call to arms and see if you have what it takes to become a warrior. Led by a historical character, participants will be put through their paces, learning commands, battlefield formations and teamwork through a lively and interactive drill session. This high-energy activity is guaranteed to get everyone moving and involved.

Storytelling

As lights are dimmed and our spaces transform, our historical character takes you back in time. Together, you will tell the tales of brave warriors and great battles that shaped history. This session encourages imagination, discussion, oracy and involvement from all ages.

Object Handling

Get hands on with our collection of arms and armour to explore what life on the front lines would have looked, felt and smelled like. Notice the details, follow the patterns and see if you have what it takes to wear the armour or wield the sword.

Craft Activity

Pour your creativity into a relaxed themed craft inspired by the day’s topic. Families can create and decorate their own keepsake to take home as a reminder of their visit.
