VE|VJ Day: 80 Years

Thursday 8 May 2025 marks 80 years since Victory in Europe - VE Day when the Second World War came to an end in Europe. This is followed by Victory Over Japan - VJ Day, which is marked on Friday 15th August 2025, which is when Japan surrendered, bringing an end to the Second World War in the East.
 

The Royal Armouries is marking the anniversaries with a series of events and special gallery displays at our museums in Leeds and Fort Nelson near Portsmouth.

Second World War Objects in Focus

From Thursday 8 May.

A new gallery display of Second World War weapons, including firearms and daggers which were used by some of the troops who fought on in the Pacific after VE day from Australia, Britain, India, Japan, and Nepal.

Fort Nelson

Firepower Weekend

Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 July.

Two days full of noise, flames and smoke as a range of artillery from the Second World War, including anti-tank guns, field artillery and anti-aircraft guns are fired, plus static displays, children's activities and music.

A brand, new film featuring the personal recollections of local people who remember both VE & VJ Day will be screened.

This is a free event, but pre-booking is essential.
