Light Night

Child on adults shoulders watching performance

As night falls, encounter the city of Leeds in a new light...

Light Night Leeds is the UK’s largest annual arts and light festival.

For the past 20 years, over two incredible nights in October, some of Leeds’s most recognisable indoor and outdoor spaces, including the Royal Armouries Museum, have been transformed by spectacular artworks and captivating performances by local, national and international artists.

Armouries Square

Illuminating the museum

This year the museum will form the backdrop for Synergies by Scenocosme (France).

Synergies is an interactive, large-scape digital projection. It also includes performance and participation, being collectively made by audience members. Synergies creates imaginary worlds, using imagery of objects including from the Royal Armouries collection. Projected at scale, and operated by members of the public, each interaction produces unexpected juxtapositions and new meaning, creating a surreal tableau.

Using a tablet, you can pick an element from the image library. Then move it in front of the camera and project it onto the walls of the museum. The objects become animated as you move them. You can play with scale, making objects larger than life. You can also put yourself in the projection.

Each participant adds something new, creating a collective artwork over the night.
