Baz Luhrmann - Joan of Arc

Live interpretation display for Baz Luhrmann research visit

Pre-production research for a historical epic

Ahead of filming his new historical feature film based on the life of Joan of Arc, Baz Luhrmann and an accompanying team of writers, researchers and costume designers received bespoke consultancy, access to primary materials and hands-on experiences at Royal Armouries Leeds.

Unparalleled Authenticity

As one of the world's leading collections of arms and armour, the Royal Armouries was able to show several period correct objects relevant to the film - helping Baz Luhrmann and team to visualise how Joan of Arc, and the soldiers around her, dressed and armed for battle in the early 15th Century.

In addition, our team of curators shared their expertise on the types of armour, weapons, combat techniques and strategies employed during the Hundred Years War, to support understanding of what life was like on the battlefields of the age.

Understanding Joan of Arc's World

To illuminate the arms and armour of Joan of Arc's world, the Royal Armouries delivered a bespoke research and consultancy service, drawing on our deep expertise and access to our extensive collection.

By highlighting relevant primary materials in the museums' galleries and storerooms, providing historical consultancy from curators and performing combat demonstrations from our live interpretation staff, we were able to answer the most challenging questions. Through a unique hands-on experience handling our collection, we were able to provide Baz Luhrmann and team a sense of what dressing for battle would have been like for Joan of Arc.

In Depth Research

Luhrmann knew he couldn’t cast someone terrified of horses – and the actor would need a bearing that could accommodate armour. (He knew what that was like, having tried armour on at the Royal Armouries museum in Leeds.)"
