Director General and Master of the Armouries

Dr Edward Impey was appointed Director General and Master of the Armouries in July 2013, and has a lifelong interest in arms and amour.

Edward studied history and archaeology at Oxford, where he then held a Junior Research Fellowship at Oriel College. He then worked for the Royal Palaces Agency, and was Curator of the Historic Royal Palaces from 1997 to 2002. From then until 2013 he was an Executive Board Director of English Heritage (as was), latterly Director of Heritage Protection and Planning.

His professional and research interests include the public presentation of buildings and collections, experimental archaeology, and architectural history, with specialisms in castle studies and the history of the Tower of London and its buildings. He has written several books and numerous articles on these and related subjects. He has had a lifelong interest in arms armour and hopes to make a modest contribution to its study. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and of the Royal Historical Society, Trustee of the Ancient Monuments Society, and Patron of the Castles Studies Trust.
