Stuart Ivinson

Stuart graduated with a BA in History from the University of Wales, Bangor in 1994, before going on to Study an MA in Medieval History and a Post Graduate Diploma in Heritage Management – both at Bangor – graduating in 1997 and 1999 respectively.

He began working at the Royal Armouries as a Gallery Host in 2000, where his interest in martial arts and medieval combat led him to work part-time within the museum’s Live Interpretation department.

He began working in the museum’s library in 2003, while studying part-time for an MA in Librarianship at the University of Sheffield, graduating in 2008. He was appointed Librarian in 2017.

Stuart has made extensive studies of various aspects of medieval warfare over the years, and is a member of the Society for Combat Archaeology. He has been practicing historical martial arts for sixteen years and is an assistant teacher at the Leeds chapters of Kunst Des Fechtens and the European Historical Combat Guild. He has given numerous demonstrations of historical combat techniques based upon his research as a member of the 3 Swords Historical Combat group; venues for these demonstrations include The National Archives at Kew, and the University of Leeds’ International Medieval Congress.

His hobbies include hill walking, reading, and trying to make his numerous replica armours fit and work better.
