Royal Armouries Public Task, 2025

The Royal Armouries’ ‘Public Task’ under the Re-Use of Public Sector Information Regulations 2015 consists of its functions under the Heritage Act 1983 and related legislation, such as the Public Records Act 1958 and the Freedom of Information Act 2000. It also includes objectives set for the Royal Armouries from time to time by its sponsoring government department in its Framework Agreement, as well as the provision of general advice relating to its core expertise to the public sector in the UK.

The Royal Armouries holds and uses documents for the following purposes within its public task:

  • The provision of access to the Royal Armouries’ collection and exhibitions: across our sites, on loan, in partnership with other museums, cultural and educational establishments and in all and any media formats;
  • The production of exhibition and collection-based interpretative, educational, scholarly, conservation, research and other content related to the collection, whether directly or through partnerships with museums and educational establishments internationally; through Royal Armouries Trading Enterprises Ltd (RATE) or associated entities; or through third parties commercially or non-commercially;
  • The distribution of that content, whether in printed, filmed, digital or any other form of media whether directly or through partnerships with museums and educational establishments internationally; through RATE or associated entities; or through third parties commercially or non-commercially;
  • The license rights for the commercial or non-commercial usage of its content by third-party media;
  • The conservation, maintenance, development, safety and security of its assets, including the collection, buildings, infrastructure and grounds.
