Accessibility
Fort Nelson is committed to being open and accessible to everyone.
About the site
Fort Nelson is a Scheduled Ancient Monument with different surfaces and levels.
There are steps of varying widths and heights, changing surfaces between paving stones, gravel, and grass. Ramps provide access to much of the site.
Information for Carers
So that everyone can make the most of their visit, we encourage carers to carry out a pre-site visit, where appropriate. Staff on site can answer your questions and direct you to areas of interest, including local facilities.
Accessing our galleries
A lift is available between the Voice of the Guns gallery and the main gallery level. The main tunnel and galleries are wheelchair accessible. Gallery films have super text captions.
Large Print
We have large print guides available for most of our galleries, please ask for a guide in the Visitor Centre.
Tactile Experiences
We want to make our collection as accessible as possible. Many of the large cannon objects are displayed in the open and may be touched.
Wheelchairs
We have two manual wheelchairs available for use, free of charge, for the duration of your visit. Wheelchairs are allocated on a first come, first served basis, please ask at the Visitor Centre on your arrival.
Toilets
Adapted toilets are available on both main levels and in the Visitor Centre.
Assistance Dogs
Assistance dogs are very welcome in the museum. There’s lots of space outside the museum for them to take a walk and toilet, and we’ll happily provide a bowl of water to drink in our café.
Parking
Our car park is directly outside the Visitor Centre and includes allocated parking spaces for visitors with disabilities. The car park is step free, please be aware that there are slopes and uneven ground.
If you have any additional needs or you’d like to discuss your visit in advance, please email fnenquiries@armouries.org.uk or call 01329 233 734. Our phone lines are open Monday - Friday, 10am to 4pm.
