The turbulent relationship between Paul Mauser, Georg Luger, and Isidor Loewe and its impact on the C96 and Luger pistols.
Speaker: Mauro Baudino, Curator of the Paul Mauser Archive, Paul Mauser Archive
Paul Mauser and Georg Luger are certainly the best known German gun designers of the late 19th and early 20th century.
The professional relationship between the two ended in a courtroom, with negative consequences for Mauser, Luger and the Loewe Group that can be traced in the development of the C96 pistol and the Luger pistol.
Prolific gun designers
The professional relationship between Paul Mauser and Georg Luger, two of the most prolific gun designers at the turn of the century, took a dramatic turn in the Spring of 1898, when disagreements over a patent issue led to a breakdown in their collaboration. How did a minor technical innovation shape the world of gun manufacturing and ultimately produce two iconic pistols, the C96 and the Luger P.08?
Join Mauro Baudino, Curator of the Paul Mauser Archive, as he dives into the profound impact this single court case had on the development of arms development. How did Mauser and Luger meet? How were their careers shaped by the industrial and historical context of the era? And where did things go wrong? This talk will explore all these questions and more, inviting listeners to consider how a figure as idealised today as Luger actually had limited morality in his everyday actions.
