Lecture

Medieval armour may be some of the highlights of the Royal Armouries’ collection, but what was their original purpose? When were they most popular, who were they made for, and why don’t we wear them anymore?! Join us as we explore the fascinating world of one of history’s most enduring images of the Middle Ages. Learn about the peak of armour development in the 15th and 16th centuries, the specific needs that went into their creation – from bringing together mobility and comfort to considerations for their use in both battle and performances – as well as their decline in the early 17th century and resurgence 200 years later amongst collectors and museums.

In this lecture, Dr Daniel Jaquet answers all these questions, before asking: what if the key to truly understanding armour is…wearing it? Join us to learn about the mobility of armour and the use of replicas to help us better understand these famed exoskeletons.
