An action-packed summer of fun awaits visitors to Fort Nelson, with barrel-loads of children’s activities, including an exciting assault course, plus weekend games and challenges.

Summer days

Come and discover the big guns of the national collection of artillery displayed around the 19-acre site and learn about D-Day with an interactive trail.

Summer activities will run daily from Saturday 20 July to Sunday 1 September and as a national museum, admission is to the Fort is free.

There is so much to do and see for free at this massive fort; with tunnels, ramparts and outdoor space for summer holiday adventures, as well as a whole museum of treasures to discover.

Junior assault course | Every day

Children will love the challenge of the junior assault course with its many varied obstacles.

Suitable for ages 5 to 12, tickets cost £3.50, pay on the door.

Daily from Saturday 20 July to Sunday 1 September.

Build the Fort | Weekends only

Fort Nelson is a massive Victorian fort, it is one of a ring of forts built to protect Portsmouth harbour against a threatened invasion from Europe.

It was an extraordinary feat of engineering, taking millions of bricks and the labour of thousands of navvies.

Come and have a go at some of our navvy challenges, including wheelbarrow races, arch building, brick wall building, and brickmaking.

Suitable for ages 5 to 12, free activities.

Weekends only (27 & 28 July, 3 & 4 August, 10 & 11 August, 17 & 18 August, 24 & 25 August, 31 August & 1 September)

Stay for the day

You can fill a full day at the Fort there's so much to see and do. Bring a picnic, there's loads of tables around the site, or order from our indoor café and refreshment kiosk, open every day for light meals, snacks and drinks.

Parking is £3 per vehicle and can be paid on arrival.
