Build the Fort

Wrecking ball and bricks

Come and have a go at our fun construction challenges this summer and find out how Fort Nelson was built.

Every weekend

Weekend activities

As well as engineers and surveyors, it took hundreds of skilled labourers called ‘navvies’ to erect this massive red brick defence.

Could you be a surveyor? A muck shifter? Or a bricklayer? Do you have what it takes to be a navvy? Or perhaps you could design your own Fort Nelson or a ditch digging machine. It’s time to roll up your sleeves and find out!

Each summer holiday weekend there will be several themed activities such as:

  • Wacky wheelbarrow work
  • Building brilliant brick walls
  • Amazingly ambitious arches
  • Fashioning Fort Nelson
  • Designing daunting defences
  • Making monster muck movers
  • Navvy narratives

These free sessions will start at 10:30am, 11:30am, 12:30pm, 2:00pm and 3:00pm, and will last between 20 and 30 minutes and are suitable for ages 5 to 12.

Six summer weekends packed full of fun activities:

  • 27 and 28 July
  • 3 and 4 August
  • 10 and 11 August
  • 17 and 18 August
  • 24 and 25 August
  • 31 August and 1 September

So grab your navvy passport, collect all the stickers and at the end of the summer claim a special ‘payment’ for all your hard work.
