Lieutenant General Sir Edward Smyth-Osbourne KCVO CBE
Smyth-Osbourne joined The Life Guards in West Germany and went on to complete four decades on active duty. He served in a broad range of regimental, command and staff appointments; on tanks, armoured cars and on his feet; operating in Europe, North and Central America, the Middle East and Asia. His principal commands were the Household Cavalry Regiment, 38 (Irish) Brigade, Major General the Household Division, NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy (Deputy) and the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps. His current honorary and voluntary military commitments in retirement from active service are: Chair Cavalry Colonels; Colonel The Life Guards and Goldstick in Waiting; Mentor, Senior Leaders Program, British Army; and President, Society for Army Historical Research.
Sir Edward became a Trustee of the Royal Armouries in May 2023 and is HM The King’s representative.
