The 'Armed Man' comes home - Friday, 17 September 2010

Royal Armouries is delighted to be collaborating with Sing Live UK on three performances of The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace by Karl Jenkins.

The Royal Armouries commissioned Jenkins to write the piece to mark the end of a millennium ravaged by wars and to create a legacy of peace and hope for the future.

Jenkins was writing the mass as the tragedy of Kosovo unfolded. This daily reminder of the horror of such conflicts, prompted him to dedicate the work to the victims of the crisis.

The Armed Man has captured the public’s imagination and topped the classical CD charts several times since its release on the day after 9/11.

Sing Live UK will perform the piece in York Minster (29 October) and Coventry Cathedral (12 November) but the concert at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds on Sunday 7 November truly brings The Armed Man home.

The mass has never before been performed at the Museum and the presence of the nation’s collection of arms and armour, left behind by ‘armed men’ from across the ages, will certainly add to the poignancy of the occasion.
