Royal Armouries supports campaign to save UK’s largest treasure hoard for the West Midlands - Thursday, 4 February 2010
The Royal Armouries is backing an official campaign to raise £3.3m to save the 7th Century Staffordshire Hoard from being split up and sold on the open market.
The hoard includes over 1,500 pieces of beautifully-crafted gold and silver, and is the largest, most valuable hoard of Anglo-Saxon treasure ever discovered in Britain.
Led by The Art Fund, the campaign aims to raise funds for the hoard to be bought jointly for two key museums in the region where it was discovered – Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, and its counterpart in Stoke-on-Trent.
The £3.3 m has to be raised by 17th April 2010.
