This October Half Term (27 October – 4 November) the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds will be playing host to characters from the First and Second World Wars.

The museums World Wars Week will give visitors an opportunity to meet characters from both World Wars as they recount their experiences through dramatic performances, storytelling and demonstrations. During the week there will also be an opportunity to get up close to a full-size Spitfire, the Second World Wars most recognisable aircraft, as well as a number of famous military vehicles.

As well as this there will be living history and object handling opportunities, a chance to meet a surgeon from the trenches, have-a-go military drills, and a host of live-action performances, including gun firing demonstrations, combats using bayonets, and costumed talks about the Somme, D-Day and Special Operations Executives during the wars.
On the 3 and 4 November Warlord Games will also be inviting visitors to come and play some quick-fire games of Bolt Action and Blood Red Skies.

Commenting on the event, Mark Jackson, Events and Informal Learning Manager, said: “2018 marks the centenary of the end of the First World War. We wanted to immerse the public in this poignant juncture of the war, whilst also paying homage to the Second World War which marks its 80th anniversary next year.

“Our programme will explore a number of topics, giving visitors an opportunity to uncover the life of a soldier on the front line, as well as the roles of other people during times of war, including medical staff and munitions workers. There will be a number of activities suitable for all of the family and a rare chance to get up close to a Spitfire, an icon of the Second World War.”
