All our workshops have been created to support specific areas of the National Curriculum and are delivered by a team of specialist educators, demonstrators and performers.

AGE OF THE KNIGHT


Explore the development of medieval warriors across the Middle Ages.

Students will engage with our handling collection of armour and weaponry of soldiers at the battles of Hastings, Agincourt and Bosworth. Then they will go on to experiment with catapults and trebuchets, test shooting them to understand the forces mastered by our medieval forebears.

The medieval collection on display at the Royal Armouries Museum is the largest and most significant of its kind in the country, and time to explore it can be built into your visit.

TUDOR DECORATION


Discover how Tudor armour was designed and decorated to impress,
as well as protect.

This art workshop draws on our beautiful, yet deadly, collection to inspire students to create their own works of art, as well as trying out Tudor decorating techniques such as copper embossing.

The Tudor and Elizabethan collection on display in the Tournament Gallery is the largest and most significant of its kind in the world, and a tour will be built into your visit.

ENGLISH CIVIL WAR


Find out how the technology and tactics of the 17th century defined military thinking even up to the modern day.

In the first session, your students will explore the handling collection of weaponry and armour to understand the key roles of cavalry and foot soldiers. In the second session, your students will be put through their paces as they learn and practice historic pike and musket drills.

The world’s most extensive collection of English Civil War arms and armour – the Littlecote Collection – can be viewed in the War Gallery.

TRENCH WARFARE


Discover how the kit, equipment and weaponry of soldiers in the First World War affected their experience of the war.

In the first session students will explore the handling collection of weaponry and armour to understand similarities and differences between British and German soldiers. In the second session, your students will learn and practice actual First World War marching, grenade, and gas mask drills.

CHRONOLOGY OF WAR


Explore the leapfrog relationship between offensive and defensive
technologies.

Learn how that relationship defined the parameters, conduct and human experience of warfare from 1066 to 1918. Students will use our extensive handling collection and the display collection to build their own narratives and understanding of continuity and change across time.

The permanent display collections in the War and Oriental Galleries are uniquely suited to enhancing an understanding of arms and ‘big history’ as they encompass armour from over 5,000 years of global history.
