Crime and Punishment

Resources to support teachers and parents while home schooling
Crime and Punishment, English, History

Think detention is the worst punishment you can get? Think again! History has punishments that would make your skin crawl. From branding your face with a red hot iron if you were lazy, to chopping off hands, ears and even heads! Historical punishments make detention look like a walk in the park!

And the crimes you could be convicted of were just down right weird. You could be punished for gossiping, having a different religion, reading banned books or even wearing a certain type of clothing!

Have a look at the video below to explore crimes and punishment from the 1500’s to the 1700’s and the objects in our collection that would have been used to punish these crimes. Then download the Crime & Punishment Learners Pack (pdf, 1MB) to learn more!
