A most beautiful and magnificent joust
Tournaments and jousts from their origins to fifteenth-century Italy
Samuel Bradley – Institute of Medieval Studies, University of Leeds

In this lecture Samuel Bradley will explore the fascinating history of the medieval tournament. Charting the development and aims of the tournament from its beginnings in a muddy field in north-eastern France to the glamorous spectacle of the late medieval joust, before discussing the little studied nature of tournaments in Italy.

Learn about the history of medieval tournaments, for example the differences between a tourney and a joust. Find out about the technical aspects of the tournament, including: the arms and armour involved, how this sport was judged, and why medieval people participated or organised these events.
