Step back in time every weekend throughout the summer and meet characters from Fort Nelson’s past. People involved in its construction and opening in Victorian times to those who fought in the two World Wars.

The naval bases at Portsmouth were a prime target for the Luftwaffe during the Second World War, and the city was second only to London for its anti-aircraft defences. Fort Nelson was a vital ammunition store and essential to keeping the coastal anti-aircraft guns in action. Meet the people who defended the local area and ‘fed the guns’.

Pre-book your visit to Fort Nelson

We recommend pre-booking your arrival time and parking to guarantee your visit as we will be restricting the number of visitors on site to help keep everyone safe. You are welcome to visit without booking but you may have to wait to enter or return later in the day.

Please be aware that due to the continued impact of COVID-19, our staff team may have to self-isolate at short notice. Unfortunately, this may affect our ability keep the museum fully open and to deliver our live events programme. We will only close the museum as a last resort if we cannot open safely. All updates will be communicated on our Facebook and Twitter pages as well as on our website.

If we are required to close the site to visitors we will automatically refund any charges for parking and the assault course for the dates affected. Refunds will be issued within 10 working days.
