Nick Hall will talk about the museum’s participation in building and firing two replica heavy guns from King Henry VIII’s favourite warship.

Twenty years ago, the Royal Armouries agreed to help the Mary Rose Trust with some experimental archaeology, intended to reveal why the main armament of the ship so strikingly consisted of beautiful cast bronze guns next to rather old-fashioned looking wrought iron guns. An unprecedented programme of replica building and trial firing was undertaken. The results were startling and gave us a better understanding of the Mary Rose as a new kind of fighting ship.
