A Victorian technological revolution: The big gun arms race
Speaker: Nicholas Hall, formerly Keeper of Artillery, Royal Armouries

During the mid-19th century, gun designers  began to adopt new materials and technologies made available from the Industrial Revolution. Allegations of government favouritism and patent infringement flew between rival engineers such as Armstrong, Blakely and Whitworth. Britain as a result fell behind German and French achievements. The lecture will make use of the excellent collection at Fort Nelson to illustrate this murky story.
