Step Back in Time to the English Civil Wars - Monday, 11 February 2013
Step back in time to the 17th century and the world of Roundheads and Cavaliers in the latest Living History Day at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds this Saturday (February 9).
Britain’s oldest public museum, and home to the national collection of arms and armour, is joining forces with Colonel Edward Montagu’s Regiment of Foote to offer a unique insight into the period’s military and civilian life.
The Regiment of Foote is from the Roundhead Association, part of the English Civil War Society. Museum and event admission are free and the living history day runs from 10am to 4pm. Visitors can:
- See demonstrations of the weapons used in the clashes between the Roundheads and those loyal to the King.
- Learn drills to teach them how to be a soldier for the day
- Witness everyday life – including sewing and spinning demonstrations and a resident scribe.
- Understand how officers and soldiers carried out their duties
As always, the Royal Armouries’ visitor experience team will be on hand with free performances and hands-on activities every day.The regiment’s Dave Lister said, “It’s great to interact with the audience and to see their reactions to hearing what life was like in the 17th century. It also gives our members a chance to learn new skills from others within the regiment and the society.”

- Bob Woosnam-Savage, AMA, took up his post at the Royal Armouries in 2001. He read Art History at the University of Manchester (1978-81) and gained a Post-Graduate Diploma in Art Gallery and Museum Studies (1982). He has been involved with work on various battlefields including Towton (1461), Bosworth (1485) and Culloden (1746).
