An etched garter design on the left greave (lower leg defence) of Henry VIII's Tonlet Armour, with the inscription HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE (‘Shame to him who thinks ill of it’). Members of the Order of the Garter wore a single garter as an emblem of their high honour.
