Caught in the beam
Anti-aircraft gunners had to be able to see their targets at night so enemy bombers had to be brightly illuminated. Projector (searchlight) operators, many of whom were women, directed the powerful beam towards the aircrafts’ sound. The beam was made by electricity jumping between two carbon rods and magnified by a concave mirror.
