Key Stage 3: Discover the Middle Ages

The Age of the Knight

The Royal Armouries world-class collection of arms and armour is the perfect resource for exploring the world of the Middle Ages and the medieval knight. Using our special handling collection investigate the development of fashion and armour. History will be brought to life though handling, demonstrations and the chance to have a go at sword fighting and brass rubbing.

Hands on History

Using pieces from our special handling collection students will look at the evidence we have for the warriors of the Middle Ages.

Students will learn how changes in fashion and weapon development influenced the design of armour from early medieval mail through to Gothic plate armour.

Students will discover the weapons and skills needed to be a knight and consider why the sword was an important weapon on and off the battlefield.

The ‘young knights’ will even learn some basic sword skills based on early manuals from the collection.

Students will also investigate images as evidence, looking at replica memorial brasses and take rubbings to differentiate between fact and fiction.
